With Chris Boswell doubtful, Pittsburgh Steelers could be starting a different kicker for first time since 2018

After sustaining a hip injury in practice on Saturday, Chris Boswell’s status for Monday night’s game versus the Washington Football Team is in question.

Initially listed as questionable on Saturday’s injury report, Boswell was downgraded to doubtful on Sunday. Though it won’t be official until Monday, the chances of Boswell suiting up are slim to none. If he doesn’t, it’ll be his first missed game since Week 16, 2018, after he was placed on injured reserve in what seemed to be more of a strategic move due to poor performance.

Boswell’s had a mostly solid 2020 making 18 of 19 field goals, but extra points are a different story — he’s missed four, the latest last week versus the Ravens. Pittsburgh has been keeping the score uncomfortably close this season, and every point counts.

Who’s likely to be kicking them this week?

Matthew Wright.

If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Wright was a post-draft signee of the Steelers back in 2019. Wright was viewed as a competitor for Chris Boswell after a down 2018 season, but Boswell got back on track, and Wright was out.

The Steelers brought Wright in for a tryout on Nov. 26th, and was signed to the practice squad on the 30th. It’s expected he’ll be elevated for tomorrow’s game.

The Lancaster, PA native played his college football at UCF. In four seasons as starter, Wright went 55-for-71 on field-goals. Monday will be his first NFL start.
