With AAF shuttering, Bengals should look to bring back Derron Smith ASAP

Remember Derron Smith?

The Cincinnati Bengals selected the Fresno State product in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL draft and he spent time on the main roster and practice squad through the middle of 2017.

In December of 2018, Smith signed on with the San Antonio Commanders of the Alliance of American Football.

But the AAF is now closing its doors.

With AAF players looking for work again, Smith would be a worthwhile target for the Bengals. He was solid in Cincinnati but never got much of a fair shake.

Predictably, Smith went on to be one of the AAF’s top performers. At the time of the Bengals drafting him all those years ago, this author even graded the move as an A and hinted at possible starter potential.

The Bengals don’t need another starter right now. But Smith, still only 27 years old, would be a quality depth target for a team one injury away from struggling in the defensive secondary.
