'Wishful thinking' - Nottingham Forest boss gives transfer update as deadline day approaches

Boss Steve Cooper remains coy on what further business Nottingham Forest could do before the transfer window closes next week.

So far this month, the Reds have added striker Keinan Davis and defenders Steve Cook and Richie Laryea to a squad which is pushing for the play-off places.

And other players have headed in the opposite direction, with Lyle Taylor becoming the latest to depart when he joined Birmingham City on loan this week, while Joao Carvalho has been pictured in Greece ahead of a switch to Olympiacos.

Cooper is still hopeful of more signings in the final few days of January, though.

“The squad could look the same. It could look different. Anything can happen,” he said, ahead of Sunday's trip to Cardiff City.

“Whatever does, I’m easy with it. You’ve still got to work with a group of players and believe in a group of players, try to get the best out of them and improve them ready for the rest of the season.

“There’s wishful thinking with transfer windows, of course. But it’s never that easy.

“We’ve been able to do some business already, early, and that’s been positive.

“If there’s one or two more things to do before it shuts in the next few days, then we shall see.

“I’ve had more hectic windows! And who knows what can happen in the last few days - it could be the calm before the storm! I’ve definitely had livelier transfer windows.

“It was good to get the ones done early, and a couple of outs have been ongoing.

“If there’s a bit of late activity, then we’ll see.”

There will not be a flurry of new arrivals before Monday’s 11pm deadline, however.

Unlike in transfer windows of the past, Forest are not scratching around trying to get deals done.

And Cooper is also keen to give some of the club’s academy players an opportunity in the months ahead, just as he did with Ateef Konate on Tuesday night.

The 20-year-old came off the bench for his league debut in the 3-0 victory over Barnsley, with the Reds head coach eager for others to follow in his footsteps.

“I’m clear - and the club are clear - about if we do bring in, what we want it to be,” Cooper added.

“We don’t need to collect players. We’ve got enough good young players in the academy.

“For me, if some players coming in are from the academy or some signings that we really want to do, then it’s a win-win. If not, we carry on working with the players and continue trying to get the best out of every day.”
