Wishaw Wycombe under-14 girls lift League Cup after last year's Hibs heartache

Wishaw Wycombe under-14 girls lifted the Regional League Cup recently after being driven to succeed by last season’s heartache.

The club suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Lanarkshire Hibs in the 2021 final, but this year they claimed a fantastic 4-1 win over Kilsyth, coming from behind to claim the silverware.

Coached by Joe Harkins, Nicky Jenkins and John Anderson, the team fought back from conceding to an early penalty to fire four past their opponents through strikes from Kievie Peacock, Mia Wilkie, Lily McAvoy and Caitlin Mitchell.

And proud girl’s academy chief, Davie Gray, was delighted to see them use their defeat last season to fuel their success.

He said: “The team did really well. It’s a good bunch of girls. They reached the cup final last year and lost to a last minute

goal 1-0 to Lanarkshire Hibs. They had that bitter taste in the mouth from last year having played a great final and just missed out.

“Not many games in girls football are a 1-0. It was a disappointing one for them, but they took all of that on board and they showed great character to come back this year and win.

“They actually went 1-0 down to a penalty within 10 minutes, so to come back from that as well and win 4-1 with a really good performance was great.”

Gray revealed the players also received a heroes’ reception when they returned home with the trophy.

He added: “The parents did some great things for the girls. They got their bus sorted to take them to the game, they made up T-shirts and banners with the Wishaw Wycombe crest on them. And then they had arranged a DJ for a wee reception for them after the game at the Cambusnethan club, so it was a really great day.

“We are all so chuffed for the team and the parents.”
