An entrepreneurial Wishaw woman has combined her two passions during lockdown to launch a thriving new business.
Qualified beautician Rachael McGuire, 23, made the most of the additional time at home to hone her cake-making credentials, which, combined with her cosmetic training, gave rise to Beauty and the Bakes, writes Ciara Fullarton.
Rachael told the Wishaw Press: “I’ve always loved baking, so when the first lockdown hit I used it as an opportunity to refine my skills and knowledge.
“I was constantly challenging myself with more and more intricate bakes, including chocolate swirl meringues with chocolate butter cream, three-tier passionfruit cake, chocolate orange truffles and caramel shortcake.
“I then began to post pictures of all my baking on my personal Instagram, for my friends and family to see.”
Rachael’s snaps of her mouth-watering creations soon began to attract attention from her impressed audience.
She explained: “I had an influx of messages from people from all over, people I don’t even know, asking to buy my bakes.”
Encouraged by her family and her boyfriend, Rachael set up a business page on Instagram.
And to ensure that the enterprise fully reflected her talents, she opted to combine both beauty and baking.
Rachael went on: “I decided to fuse my newly honed baking skills with my pre-existing cosmetic training.
“I’ve always loved beauty and I’m a fully qualified eyelash technician.”
Unfortunately, current restrictions mean Rachael has been unable to properly implement the beauty element of her business but it’s something she is looking forward to developing in the coming months.
The International Business and Tourism Management graduate certainly has a lot on her plate as she balances Beauty and the Bakes with her full-time job as a hotel manager.
Rachael laughed: “It’s just as well I like to keep busy.
“I love what I do and feel I’m on my way to establishing a thriving business. My goal is to open my own shop one day.”
