Wishaw woman ecstatic after winning new car in St Andrew's Hospice raffle

A Wishaw woman is celebrating after she cruised off with a brand new car for just £20.

Ecstatic Audrey Allen, 50, won the white Dacia Sandero in St Andrew’s Hospice’s Grand Car Raffle.

“My husband Stephen got a call on the day the draw was made asking me to phone Bruce back at the hospice”, said Audrey.

“I called back when I finished work and he gave me the good news”.

Audrey realised she was a winner but didn’t believe she would be driving off with the new car.

“I knew third prize was £250 and second prize was £750, and first prize was the car. I just thought ‘oh brilliant at least I’ve won £250’.

“Then he said you have actually won the car so I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s fantastic’.”

The mum-of-one is delighted with her new wheels as she’s used to driving a 15-year-old Ford Focus.

“The car I have just now passed is an old 04-plate so I could certainly have been doing with a new car.

“The thing is I don’t drive a lot so I couldn’t justify buying one. So it’s absolutely fantastic getting this car.”

Audrey hasn’t quite decided what to do with her old car yet.

The couple’s daughter Lauren will be 17 next year so she may keep it for her to use as a runaround when she passes her test.

Hospice Chief Executive Bruce High drew the three winning tickets, alongside Andy Thorogood from raffle sponsor Bonnar Accident Law.

Pat Keenan of Airdrie scooped the second prize of £750, and Janette Leyden of Crawfordjohn won the third prize of £250.

Officer manager Audrey, continued: “My mum passed away in the hospice in 2002 the year before my daughter was born.

“I’ve supported the hospice ever since and I’ve done the walk. They send me booklets of raffle tickets every year through the post and I just buy them all myself.

“They sent me two booklets of 10 so I got a new car for £20. That’s a very good return. And there’s actually half a tank of petrol in it.”

St Andrew’s Hospice, a registered charity, and provides specialist palliative care free of charge for patients in both North and South Lanarkshire.

John Brady, Head of Fundraising at the Hospice, said: “We are delighted that the Grand Car Raffle has raised around £40,000 for St Andrew’s this year.

“We’d like to thank Bonnar Accident Law for generously making the car available as the top prize.

“It’s thanks to the many kind hearted people who buy raffle tickets, purchase goods in our shops, leave gifts in their Wills and take part in our events that St Andrew’s Hospice is able to continue providing quality specialist palliative care to the people of Lanarkshire.”
