Wishaw woman counting the cost following fire at block of flats

A Wishaw family are counting the cost after a fire at a block of flats in Cambusnethan.

Dani McNally was out with mum Lynne Crouch on Sunday, February 12, when they received news that a fire had broken out in one of the flats in Lynne’s block in Cambusnethan Street.

Thankfully, there were no serious injuries but the damage caused by the flames means Lynne has lost all of her belongings and is now living with her daughter Sophie.

Lynne’s other daughter Dani said: “We were out for my daughter’s 18th birthday in Glasgow when we got the call.

“We rushed back as quick as we could and saw some of the damage and we saw some of mum’s neighbours and their landlords.

“There’s an investigation ongoing but we just hope mum can get back into her flat as soon as possible.”

Dani, Sophie and Lynne are now in discussions with her landlord over new accommodation.

However, a timeframe of between four to six months has been given to return to her flat.

Dani, who runs Glamweaves and Beauty in Wishaw’s Hill Street, said: “Mum was offered a place in Forgewood by her landlord which wasn’t suitable for her.

“She suffers from mental health problems so this has really hit her hard and moving to the other side of Motherwell would not suit her as she needs her family around her.

“We are hopeful of getting her somewhere close to us as soon as we can.

“She’s basically been left with two bags of clothes but luckily she has us here to support her.

“I shudder to think what would happen if it was an elderly person with no family.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 8.56pm on Sunday, February 12, to reports of a building fire in Wishaw.

“Operations Control mobilised four appliances to the town’s Cambusnethan Street, where firefighters were met by a fire within the building’s ground floor.

“Crews extinguished the fire and worked to make the area safe before leaving the scene.

“Two casualties were taken to hospital by paramedics for a precautionary check-up.”

A spokesperson for Slater Hogg & Howison, who manage Wendy's flat on behalf of her landlord, added: "As the property has been deemed uninhabitable as a result of the fire, Slater Hogg & Howison has actively been liaising with the tenant to find another suitable property to rent."
