They call Georgina McFetrich the “eighth wonder of the world”, and she just giggles.
It’s no wonder she’s earned that nickname from her family as Georgina celebrated her 102nd birthday in Wishaw last week.
The remarkable pensioner has outlived generation after generation in her family, and made it through world wars into the bargain.
“My mum has outlived different generations on both sides of the family,” said her 71-year-old daughter Irene.
“There’s only a few of us left in the family in our 70s and a cousin in their 80s.
“I like to call mum the eighth wonder of the world, which she has a laugh about.
“She’s certainly a wonder in our family.
“She’s lived a long, happy life and is very happy living at Kirknowe Care Home in Stewarton Street.”
Georgina is originally from Greenock but moved to Overtown in 2002 to be nearer her daughter Irene and her husband Jim, who have stayed in Wishaw for the past five decades.
She lived in Overtown for 13 years — also outliving many of her elderly neighbours —before moving into Kirknowe five years ago.
Georgina’s husband James died in 1972 at the age of 52, and she went on to do voluntary work for Greenock Lunch Club for nearly two decades, serving food and drinks to elderly people in her community.
Irene said: “My mum really enjoyed this voluntary work, helping in the kitchen and serving tea and the meals.
“She had a really good, healthy social life with everyone at the lunch club.
“Now living at Kirknowe, my mum is very happy.
“She loves it there, I’m in seeing her every day.
“The staff at Kirknowe are great with her as well so it’s been a good move.”
