Wishaw store has booze ban lifted after being caught selling alcohol to under-18s

A Wishaw store has had its booze ban lifted following a suspension for selling alcohol to under-18s.

Maxton Stores in Coltness had been banned from selling alcohol after being caught flogging booze illegally earlier this year.

The store, based in Maxton Crescent, had its licence suspended for three weeks as a result of the offence after a Licensing Board meeting late last month.

However, a council spokesman this week stated that the store was now able to sell alcohol from Saturday, May 22.

Sgt Jim Mutter, from Wishaw’s Community Policing Team, said: “Police regularly carry out visits to licensed premises to ensure that they are working in line with the conditions of the licence.

“I would urge all staff in shops to apply the ‘Challenge 25’ policy when selling alcohol and request that they ask to see an acceptable form of ID.

“I would also remind people that it is an offence to sell alcohol to anyone under the age of 18. It’s an offence for adults to buy or attempt to buy alcohol for someone under the age of 18.”
