Wishaw store forced to close its doors temporarily as panic buyers race to stock freezers

Panic buyers forced a Wishaw store to temporarily close its doors.

Iceland in Wishaw Main Street had to close for around 15 minutes due to the huge number of customers desperately wanting to restock their freezers during the COVID-19 outbreak.

The closure of the store left many shoppers queuing outside with a number of people tweeting of “ugly scenes” at the store.

An Iceland spokesperson told the Wishaw Press of the closure but denied there was any problems due to the temporary measure imposed.

He said: “A very high volume of customers came into the Wishaw store when it opened this morning, leading to excessively long queues for the tills that were blocking the aisles.

“Our duty manager accordingly closed the store for approximately 15 minutes to help process these customers through the tills.

“I understand that there were some customers complaining that they couldn’t get into the store during the short closure period, and also some customers upset by the congestion in the store.

“However, our area manager assures me that there were no ‘ugly scenes’ and the closure decision was taken proactively to prevent any issues and to manage the volume of people, and not as a result of any incidents in the store.”
