Wishaw school pupils WILL get exam results upgraded after government u-turn

Wishaw school pupils are to have their exam results upgraded after the Scottish Government agreed to accept teacher estimates of scores.

The government u-turn follows an outcry from pupils after a moderation system saw 125,000 estimated results being downgraded.

All results that were downgraded will now be withdrawn and replaced by the original estimates.

Education Secretary John Swinney said he was sorry for the “feeling of unfairness” caused by the downgrading.

There had been claims that many pupils had their results downgraded because they were from less affluent areas.

Motherwell and Wishaw MP, Marion Fellows, wrote to the Education Secretary last week to raise concerns about how pupils – especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds – were being graded.

Following Mr Swinney’s announcement today, Mrs Fellows said: “I am glad the Education Secretary has listened to and acted on the concerns raised by teachers, parents, pupils and me on the way in which pupils were graded by the SQA this year. Pupils will now have their work and ability accurately reflected in their grades.

“Pupils should not have been graded based on their school’s previous performance. This was impacting disproportionately on those from disadvantaged backgrounds – many of whom live in my constituency and who had contacted me to raise their issues.

“The re-grading will provide our young people with a reason for hope and a fair chance as they progress into adulthood. Well done to all our young people who have studied hard.
