Wishaw rider leads out the 2021 Grand National winner

A horse led out by a Wishaw girl has won the Grand National.

And in doing so, the famous race was won by a female jockey for the first time ever.

Rachael Blackmore secured victory on Minella Times, with more than some room to spare.

Speaking after the race, Rachael said: “I don’t feel male, female right now, I don’t even feel human.

“This is just unbelievable.”

And the horse had been led out by teenager Laura Hoey, originally from Wishaw.

Lanarkshire Live told you earlier today how 19-year-old Laura would lead out Minella Times, a horse trained by top Irish trainer, Henry de Bromhead.

It was just a shame that such incredible history unfolded behind closed doors as some COVID restrictions remain in place.

Minella Time was the second favourite behind Cloth Cap, but Rachael was highly tipped to make history.

That’s after a hugely successful Cheltenham Festival where she was the first female rider to be the leading jockey. Indeed, in the last four weeks, Rachael has won the Champion hurdle, Ballymore Novices and Champion Bumper, along with four other titles - and now the Grand National.

Laura’s passion for horses began at an early age and got her first pony when she was 10.

She went to racing school in Newmarket when she was just 16 and started working in the industry the following year.

Delighted to be part of such a brilliant team, she spoke previously paid tribute to Laura.

She told us: “Rachael is just the nicest person.

“When she wins she always maintains that it’s a team effort. At Cheltenham it was incredible. We were all delighted.

“I’m very lucky to be doing what I’m doing.”

A rider herself, Laura will be hoping to secure a ride at the world famous race in the future.

She was even given a special mention during the trophy presentation ceremony.

Praising Laura, the MC said: “The horses wouldn’t be where they are today without the hard work and dedication of Laura Hoy.”
