Wishaw pupils struggle on first day of home schooling due to Microsoft Teams glitch

Students and staff across Wishaw struggled to use Microsoft Teams as pupils today began learning from home.

Parents and schools reported issues with the platform running slowly or not allowing access on Monday as thousands tried to log on at the same time.

Coltness High tweeted: “Unfortunately it appears Microsoft Teams is struggling to cope with the traffic this morning. This is across Scotland and not isolated to Coltness. Pupils and staff are having difficulty loading files. We have reported the issue and hopefully this will be resolved soon.”

Clyde Valley High School also stated: “Our online learning provision begins today for all of our pupils. Due to the very high demand for Microsoft Teams across Scotland, there may be issues initially getting logged on or accessing some files.

“This is a national issue on the site and may take a little time to rectify.”

St Aidan’s High posted to its followers: “We are aware of issues affecting Glow this morning across the country. Staff are trying to upload tasks but the high level of use seems to be causing problems. Thanks for your patience. Keep trying and hopefully things improve.”

Microsoft Teams tweeted that the issue was being investigated as Nicola Sturgeon addressed the problem in her daily briefing.

The First Minister assured schools and parents the issue was global and was “not unique to Scotland”.

She said: “Firstly, let me begin by acknowledging that today sees many teachers, parents, and young people embark on another period of home-schooling.”

“There are a range of resources and support available, however I know some of you might be having an issue this morning with Microsoft Teams. This is not an issue that is unique to Scotland, or unique to school, but I understand Microsoft is currently working to address it.”

A spokesman for North Lanarkshire Council added : “There was a problem across the country with Microsoft experiencing issues with the Teams service today.

“Our schools have informed parents about this and are providing pupils with alternative digital learning options until this issue is resolved.”
