Wishaw need to be at their best to down Johnstone Burgh, says boss

Wishaw boss Mark Daly admits his side will have to be at their best to beat in-form Johnstone Burgh.

The Beltane Park side weren’t in competitive action over the weekend in the 13-team West of Scotland League Conference B, but they return to action on Saturday against a side who thrashed Carluke Rovers 6-1 in their last outing.

Daly’s men edged past 10-man Rovers in their first game of the season, winning 2-1, so he reckons his side must improve on that showing to down Burgh.

He said: “We are under no illusions it will be a hard game.

“I’ve forewarned the boys that we’ll need to be at our best to beat them because they are a good outfit, who had a good results against Darvel in pre-season as well.

“They are no mugs anyway, that’s for sure, and we’ll prepare all week to try and match them. It’s a great result to go there and win 6-1, which just reiterates how hard it will be to beat them.

“But they are coming to our patch, so we’ve got to make our place a hard place to come.

“We want to build on our result against Carluke as well - and performance wise. We weren’t at our best against them, but we got the job done, which is more important.”

Wishaw warmed up for the match with a 4-2 friendly win over Bathgate.

A David O’Donnell double, plus strikes from Steph McDonald and Matt McGibbon earned them the bragging rights.

And Daly was enthused by what he saw from his charges.

He added: “On Saturday at Bathgate we were excellent. The first 20 minutes were outstanding and we probably should have scored more.

“We were really good for large parts of it and that gives us a platform to build on for Saturday. If we can win our first two games, that would be a great start because it looks like being a tough league.”
