Wishaw motorbike fanatic given fitting send off by family, friends & biker pals

A motorbike fanatic from Wishaw who died recently was given a fitting send off on Friday by his family, friends and biker pals.

Crowds turned out for the funeral of Mark McGeary, who died in hospital a fornight ago after suffering a major heart attack and blood clot.

As the hearse and family cars left the funeral parlour in Wishaw and headed for Daldowie Crematorium, around 20 bikers formed a procession for Mark’s final journey.

Mark, 31, was a lover of motorbikes and volunteered to help out as a marshal for biker events with Route 66 TT Rider Training in Motherwell.

His heartbroken biker friends at Route 66 got together on Friday afternoon to participate in the procession and assist with traffic.

Trieda Hill, of Route 66, said: “Mark’s family were really pleased with what we did, and it was a privilege for us to give him a nice send off.

“For us it was a way to say goodbye, and also assist the family with traffic to make sure they got to the funeral okay. On the way to the crematorium there had been an accident on the road which affected the route, but we helped stopped the traffic for the hearse and family.

“As the funeral was on a weekday we never had as many riders as weekends, but there were about 20 of us taking part.”

Mark, who worked as a bouncer at The Horseshoe Bar in Motherwell, was described as a loving, family guy who would help anyone out.

He had been admitted to Wishaw’s hospital on January 10 with symptoms not believed to be life-threatening.

However, Mark was quickly diagnosed with pneumonia and a severe chest infection, and died 10 days later in hospital after suffering a major heart attack and blood clot.

Mark’s sister-in-law Allison McGeary set up a Go Fund Me page to help the family give Mark a fitting send-off, and it exceeded its £1,000 target in just three days.

The family also praised medics at the critical care unit at University Hospital Wishaw for the care they gave Mark.
