Wishaw kid runs three miles each day during December to raise cash for hospice

A determined Wishaw youngster ran three miles every day in December to raise money for charity.

Gerry Taggart, aged eight, took part in the December Marcothon challenge, which was to run every day for three miles or 25 minutes.

Raising money for St Andrews Hospice, the primary four pupil tackled rain and snow to complete the gruelling challenge.

Gerry’s dad, Gerry Snr, said: “He keeps fit normally through going to my boxing club, Cambusnethan Miners, and Carluke Roar football club.

“He really enjoyed the running and was really up for it every day. He would do it every morning before he went to school.

“There was a couple of challenges, such as the snow and rain but he battled on through it.

“He actually really enjoyed running in the snow, but I think he spent more time playing with snowballs during that.

“The rain was a bit tougher due to the wet conditions but it never stopped him from completing the challenge.”

Gerry chose St Andrews Hospice to raise money for as his school class at St Ignatius Primary had raised money for them not long ago.

At the time of writing he had raised £1,630, smashing his £1,000 goal.

His dad said: “We are all so proud of him and what he has achieved.

“On his final run, I organised some friends and family to greet him at the end and clap him over the finish line.

“I think he enjoyed the surprise, he was really proud of himself and what he achieved.”
