Wishaw Juniors urge SJFA NOT to relegate or promotion teams if the season is axed due to coronavirus fears

Wishaw Juniors committee member Alex Young doesn't believe teams should be relegated or promoted if the junior divisions are abandoned.

The Beltane side sit in the relegation spots of West Region League One but the season has been shut down until further notice amid the coronavirus scare.

Young backed the decision to put a temporary halt on football amid the COVID-19 outbreak, but believes the league standings currently shouldn't see sides demoted.

However, the former Wishaw manager thinks it's more likely a fresh fixture list will see games squeezed into a short period of times - leading to at least three games a week.

He told Lanarkshire Live Sport : "I feel like it's the right decision to make at this time and to help people with underlying illnesses stay safe. We as a club think it's the correct decision.

"We pay players expenses per game so as a club it shouldn't have a major impact on us financially. That has always been how we work it, and it helps us budget for the season.

"I would say if they call the season off they shouldn't have any promotion or relegation. If they are going to be looking at scrapping the season altogether, which I can't see happening, it wouldn't be a level playing field.

"We have still got three games in hand on some of the teams around us so there is a long way to go in the season.

"It would give other teams an unfair advantage, but I don't see the SJFA doing that.

"I would expect a new fixture list to come out where all the fixtures are crammed into a month.

"Nobody can say how long it's going to go on for but I think we would end up playing three games in a week. It's not ideal with the size of squad we have but that would be the most fair."
