Wishaw inspector's advice to keep your home safe this festive period

Wishaw’s Area Inspector has urged the public to take simple safety measures to make sure they keep themselves and their homes safe during the Christmas holidays.

Inspector Alan Mulholland made the plea ahead of the festive season as families gather at this special time of year.

Inspector Mulholland said he wanted to send a message to members of the community to remind everyone of "some simple" safety measures.

He told Lanarkshire Live : “This is a time of year for people to enjoy the festive season and spend time with their family, we hope your Christmas will be a safe and happy one.

“I want to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and a happy New Year, we will as ever be on hand throughout the Christmas period carrying out directed patrols to ensure the safety of the community and will continue to do so as we enter in to the New Year.”

Doorstep crime continues to be a problem at this time of year and police are urging locals to be wary of anyone who calls at your door unexpectedly, especially if they offer to do any type of work or repair; always check someone’s credentials and phone the company they represent or check online, but never use contact details they give you.

In regards to your home it is advised that you keep your home securely locked at all times; don’t leave keys on the inside of door locks, under mats or anywhere else an intruder may easily find them; avoid keeping large amounts of cash in the house and don’t leave valuables in sight of windows.

To protect your vehicle lock doors and close windows when vehicle is unattended even when paying for fuel.

Drivers should also hide keys and fobs whilst at home, consider an alarm, immobiliser and tracker plus consider physical security such as a steering wheel or gear lever lock.
