Wishaw hospital's Covid patients up by a third in just two weeks

More than 350 people are being treated for coronavirus in Lanarkshire as the number in intensive care hits record levels.

As of 8am on Monday, January 25, a total of 25 Covid-19 patients were in intensive care, with a total of 358 people in the region’s hospitals having tested positive.

All three of the county’s acute hospitals have seen a rise in Covid-19 patients over the past two weeks after NHS Lanarkshire postponed a number of outpatient services and elective procedures.

University Hospital Wishaw now has the most coronavirus patients at 133 - up by almost a third in a fortnight - with the number in intensive care doubling from five to 10.

University Hospital Monklands has seen a 15 per cent increase to 124 over the past fortnight while University Hospital Hairmyres is now dealing with 79 coronavirus patients - up by one.

Eight Covid-19 patients at Monklands are in ICU - up by one - while seven patients at Hairmyres, up by three, are in ICU.

A further 22 patients with coronavirus are in the county’s community hospitals.

Overall hospital capacity has been reduced after NHS Lanarkshire took the decision to postpone a number of outpatient services and elective procedures two weeks ago amid fears the number of people hospitalised with Covid-19 could double.

The region’s hospitals are now operating at 90 per cent capacity with just 82 free beds.

Figures on the number of vaccinations in Lanarkshire have also been been published by the health board and 28,123 people have received their first jab.
