Wishaw family wake up in terror after joyrider crashes stolen car into house in middle of night

A terrified family were woken during the night after a joyrider crashed a stolen car through their garden and smashed into their house.

Wendy Armstrong and husband Shane, both 47, were jolted awake at 4am to the sound of screeching police sirens and a vehicle crashing headlong through their garden brick wall in Wishaw.

The couple ran to the living room window where they saw a car speeding towards them before it collided with their front window.

Wendy’s mum Joyce Rowan, 80, who suffers from dementia and lives with her daughter, was left badly shaken by the incident.

As the family looked out of their front door, a huge police presence, including four cars and a van, surrounded the area.

Officers arrested a 31-year-old man for allegedly stealing the car from another property nearby before the vehicle crashed on Kirk Road.

Wendy told the Record: “We were in the house and woke around 4am to the sound of the police cars.

“There were blue lights and cars outside which were blocking the road.

“We were alarmed by the noise and saw the car come clambering right through the garden before hitting our front window."

Wendy, who cares for her mum full time says Joyce has been left confused and frightened by the crash.

She added: ”My mum has dementia and sleeps at the back of the house.

“The noise was so bad that it woke her up, she was shouting out for help. She was very traumatised.

“It’s just been a really, really bad experience.”

The family are now faced with significant damage to their house.

The brick wall surrounding the property has been left in ruins, their front window was partially broken and their garden has been destroyed.

Wendy estimates the damage will cost thousands to repair.

Wendy said: "We spoke to the police briefly when it happened but we’re not sure where we go from here.

"They have started trying to clear the rubble but I'm worried things will take longer to repair due to lockdown restrictions.

She added: “Last night I didn’t sleep a wink. Every little noise was making me jump."

A police spokesperson said: "Police were called around 3.55am on Sunday, 26 April, 2020, following the report of theft of a car at a property in Goldcrest Court, Wishaw.

"The driver later crashed at an address on Kirk Road, Wishaw.

"A 31-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
