Wishaw exit by O'Donnell frees up funds for club to strengthen

Wishaw boss Mark Daly says David O’Donnell’s transfer to Forth Wanderers will free up funds for his side to strengthen in the new year.

The striker was put on the transfer list at his own request last week and has been snapped up by Conference A side Forth, netting on his debut for the club in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Glasgow Perthshire in the West of Scotland League Cup.

Daly had no issues with O’Donnell looking to leave after 18 months at the Beltane and will now seek out a replacement, although he admits he is in no rush with the festive break in the WOSFL kicking in after Saturday’s Conference C clash away to EK Thistle.

He said: “David wasn’t happy about the amount of game time he was getting and we had a chat about that.

“I’ve known David long enough as a friend and we know if you are not enjoying it, you are better off moving on. Football is about enjoying it so hopefully he gets back to enjoying his football at Forth.

“We got a deal done with Forth and there will be funds available for us to strengthen.

“We will keep our eyes on things but we’ve not got anyone lined up at the moment. I’ve got a strong enough squad so there’s no panic to get someone in quickly to replace him.”

Wishaw’s cup tie with Beith was postponed at the weekend and they now look ahead to their league clash with Thistle.

With his team sidelined, Daly watched the Jags beat St Anthony’s 3-1 in the cup and he’s expecting a strong challenge from the Showpark side.

He added: “I went and watched them beat St Anthony’s so I know we are in for a tough game.

“EK are a good outfit and to go and beat the Ants on the home park , who were on a good wee run there after beating Drumchapel, that tells me they will make it difficult for us.

“But hopefully I’ve taken enough from Saturday to help us set up right and we can win the game.”If we can get a wee victory it will set us up nicely for the new year.

“Hopefully the weather holds up.”
