Wishaw drama as keeper collides with post during league opener

By Ben McNicol

Wishaw could face problems in rescheduling their West of Scotland League clash with Neilston, after it was abandoned due to a horror injury to keeper Iain Stewart.

But a bigger problem will be not having their shot-stopper for a hectic period of games, after he collided with a post 30 minutes into the Conference C opener, with the match abandoned as the stricken keeper was taken to hospital with head and neck injuries.

Wishaw hosted East Kilbride Thistle on Wednesday, winning 5-0, and travel to Lanark United on Saturday.

And assistant David Dunn said: “We’ve not even looked at the Neilston game to be honest, as we have a game every Saturday and Wednesday all the way up to September. It’s the last thing we’ve spoken about."

Dunn says everyone associated with the club are “mightily relieved” that Stewart is recovering.

He said: "I spoke to Iain over the weekend and thankfully he’s coming on OK, apart from his head injury and there are no other serious injuries.

"Obviously, we’re going to continue to monitor him over the coming weeks.”
