Wishaw Care team on a mission to help out the homeless

Residents and staff at a Wishaw care home have spent months putting together survival kits for the homeless.

The generous group at Morningside care home have spent around £750 on the 50 packages.

Several residents and staff are heading into Glasgow on Thursday night to meet with volunteers from H4th to see first hand how they’re packages will benefit those who have found themselves living on the streets.

Barry FitzBlevins, lifestyle co-ordinator at the home, said: “Everyone has put a lot of effort into this project. The residents have really enjoyed doing it. It’s gave them a focus and really motivated them to join in with the group activities.

"They were desperate to help out when they found out just how many people are sleeping rough nowadays. I showed them clips from a few documentaries about homelessness in Glasgow and it really touched them.”

Around three months ago, Julie Govan, staff nurse in the dementia unit at the care home, asked Barry if he wanted to help her with the packages. After hearing of Julie’s plans, Barry knew he wanted to get involved and thought it would be a great project for the residents too.

As well as relying on family members to bring in items for the kits, residents went shopping with Barry to purchase essentials.

Included in the kits are; thermal hats, thermal gloves, scarves/snoods, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, shampoo, moisturiser, body wash, sanitary products, water bottles, energy bars, plasters, mouthwash, lip balms and sanitiser hand gel.

H4th are a voluntary non-profit community group who support members of the community experiencing severe poverty and homelessness.

Every Thursday evening from 8pm on Cadogan Street in Glasgow, the volunteers provide hot meals and snacks, clothes, bedding and basic toiletries to those who have fell on hard times.
