Wishaw boss slams individual errors as Cambuslang Rangers hit them for six in cup

Wishaw boss David Dunn was furious with his sides’ defending as they shipped six goals without reply at Cambuslang Rangers on their way to crashing out of the South Challenge Cup.

It was always going to be a tall order for the West of Scotland Second Division outfit against their Premier Division hosts in round two, but Dunn felt his players didn’t help themselves with their defending at set-pieces.

He said: “It’s a big ask for us to go there with our budget compared to theirs, but I still expect to go and win every game we play in and try and think of a way to do that.

“We were actually in the game for a while but individual errors have cost us five of the six goals.

“They are a good side and we had a few players missing. Kieran Brannan was only fit enough for the bench as well so it was always going to be difficult.

“Their last few goals are corners. Now, I can take going there and get cut open with good play, but I can’t accept the boys being unmarked in the six yard box and getting free headers.

“When you go to these places, you can’t do that and that’s what’s so disappointing for me because we did well in stages. It looks like an absolute rout and we didn’t help ourselves.”

Wishy trailed 3-0 at the break and Dunn felt the turning point came at 1-0 when they came agonisingly close to an equaliser.

He added: “Their second goal sums up our luck. Mark Canning tries to chip the goalie with a great effort, it hits the bar and the keeper catches it.

“From his kick, their boy gets on the end of it, gets a shot away and it is 2-0.”

A home clash with Rossvale Academy now awaits in the West of Scotland League Cup on Saturday and Dunn added: “I’d love to make changes but my team is not getting picked on performances at the moment, it is just down to what I have available.

“That’s not good but that’s the situation we are in. But this is a big week for us. I’ll make changes where I can.

“I’d like to think there will be a reaction from the players and we need to get out of the habit of being easy to beat.”
