Wishaw boss Mark Daly is eager to make a mark on West of Scotland League

Wishaw boss Mark Daly is “quietly confident” that his side can make an impact in the West of Scotland League Conference C, ahead of a tricky opener at Neilston on Saturday.

Daly says it has been a decent pre-season for the Beltane Park side, despite a 4-0 friendly defeat at home to Whitletts Vics on Saturday, and he’s happy enough with his squad.

Wishaw follow their visit to Brig O’Lea Stadium at the weekend with a midweek clash at home to East Kilbride Thistle, next Wednesday and Daly is looking forward to the WoSFL getting underway.

“The big ball’s coming out,” he told Press Sport. This is what we’ve worked hard for, and we’re looking forward to it.

“It’s been a decent enough pre-season; it was disappointing on Saturday, mind you, but we’re looking forward to getting the league started.

“It’s a tough start, Neilston will be one of the favourites, but we need to go there at some point, so we might as well go early doors and see where we’re at.

“We did well against them last year, and should have got more than we did out of the game, so we’re quietly confident, going there. We’re away to Lanark and Petershill on the Saturdays after that, so three hard away ties, and in between we’ve got two home games.

“For me, you need to win your home games.

“It’s a difficult start, there’s no doubt about that, and it will be a good test – you’ll see where you’re at after five games, but I’m quietly confident with what we’ve got.

“We have aspirations, like anybody else, and we’re not here to make up the numbers.

“We have our own aspirations, internally, of where we want to be, and I have no doubt that we can, with the squad we’ve got, but you need a bit of Lady Luck on your side, too.

“But we’re quietly confident in what we’ve got and where we can finish.”

Daly says Wishaw learned some tough lessons from Saturday’s defeat, but said it’s important to get that out of the way.

He said: “We struggled on Saturday, that was probably one of our worst games, but that’s what pre-season is for.

“There are things to work on this week and iron out the problems that we had.”
