In the wake of a tragic incident at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Trish Kilpin, executive director of the Wisconsin Department of Justice Office of School Safety, highlighted the importance of recognizing warning signs that may indicate a person is on the path to committing a dangerous act.
Kilpin emphasized that school violence is preventable and often stems from individuals feeling upset or harboring grievances that lead them to resort to violence as a means of resolution. She described this progression as a 'pathway to violence' and stressed the need for early intervention.
According to Kilpin, there are typically indicators or warning behaviors that may signal a person's deepening desperation and despair. She noted that peers and community members are often aware of individuals who may be planning to engage in dangerous behavior and encouraged the community to report any concerns to the tip line, Speak Up, Speak Out Wisconsin.

The tip line has been instrumental in receiving information about potential threats, with bullying and harassment being the most common issues reported. Since its inception, Speak Up, Speak Out Wisconsin has received over 11,000 tips, including more than 350 tips specifically related to concerns about someone planning an attack.
Kilpin's message underscores the critical role that community members play in preventing school violence by being vigilant and proactive in reporting any suspicious or concerning behavior. By working together and staying informed, individuals can help create safer environments for students and school communities.
