Wisconsin, Northwestern wore throwback uniforms, and college football fans hated them

No. 8/9 Wisconsin and Northwestern both took the field Saturday in Madison wearing alternate uniforms inspired by each team’s retro styles.

Both alternate looks by Under Armour are simple and have the schools’ classic color schemes. “UW” is written on the front of the Badgers’ uniforms and on their helmets, while “NU” is similarly placed for the Wildcats.

As Under Armour explained:

Ahead of their 2019 matchup, Under Armour worked with the Wildcats and Badgers to create uniforms that honor the history between the teams. As part of the brand’s celebration of college football’s 150th anniversary, when they play each other Northwestern and Wisconsin will wear uniforms inspired by their respective teams in the 1890s.

Under Armour identified each of the Wildcats-Badgers games that ended in a tie, and used the 0-0 result in 1891 as the creative catalyst behind this year’s threads.

Both teams will wear minimalist uniforms, bringing the feeling of the earliest days of college football to Camp Randall. The “NU” and “UW” from the 19th century flyer sweaters will adorn the Northwestern and Wisconsin jerseys and helmets.

When the teams announced these uniforms back in August, the reaction on social media was filled with mixed reviews — and Wisconsin’s khakis were also a little controversial. But early in the game Saturday after seeing the uniforms in action, fans were hating on these throwback looks.

There were some positive reviews, but college football fans on the internet seemed largely very against these alternate uniforms Saturday.
