Wisconsin maintains momentum with 54-10 rout of Akron

MADISON, Wis. _ Now that is how you sustain the momentum established by toppling a top-10 team in the season opener.

Suffering no hangover from the glorious day at Lambeau Field one week earlier, Wisconsin dominated Akron from the coin flip in its home opener.

On a day that saw other ranked teams either lose at home or struggle to lesser foes, No. 10 Wisconsin rolled to a 54-10 victory over the Zips in front of a crowd of 77,331 on Saturday.

UW rolled up 586 total yards and held Akron to 224 yards. The Zips had the ball for just 19 minutes, 18 seconds.

Tailback Corey Clement sat out the second half after suffering a minor injury to his lower left leg but still finished with 111 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.

Quarterback Bart Houston was wild early but was in sync with wide receiver Jazz Peavy and finished 15 of 22 for 231 yards and two touchdowns.

Peavy, a redshirt junior, entered the day with 22 catches for 279 yards and no touchdowns.

He had seven catches for 100 yards and two scores, covering 13 and 34 yards _ in the first half. He also had a 23-yard run and threw a key block on Houston's 47-yard completion to Robert Wheelwright.

Peavy played sparingly in the second half as UW gave its young receivers work and didn't add another catch.

Redshirt freshman Alex Hornibrook took over for Houston to open UW's second series in the second half and capped an 83-yard drive with an 8-yard strike to fullback Alec Ingold to help UW push its lead to 40-10. He then added a 35-yard pass play to freshman A.J. Taylor on UW's 63-yard touchdown march.

Linebacker T.J. Edwards (foot) made his season debut and recorded one sack.

UW (2-0) has one more game before opening Big Ten play. The Badgers this week host Georgia State (0-2), which suffered a 48-14 loss Saturday at Air Force.

UW took the ball to start the game and set a physical tone immediately.

The Badgers ran the ball on the first six plays and moved from their 17 to the Akron 45.

UW took advantage of an offside call, which wiped out an incompletion on third-and-7 from the Akron 9, when Clement scored from four yards out on the next play. Rafael Gaglianone's conversion gave UW a 7-0 lead with 8:05 left in the quarter.

UW's defense then forced a punt after three plays and the Badgers moved from their 13

The big play was a short pass that Wheelwright turned into a 47-yard gain to the Akron 9. But it was the block of Peavy, on cornerback Bryce Jones, that sprung Wheelwright.

UW moved to the Akron 1 but faced fourth and goal.

Clement got the ball, saw a gaping hole to his right but tripped while making a quick cut and fell down at the 2.

Akron took over on downs but gave the ball back _ as well as more points _ just seconds later.

A false-start penalty moved the ball to the 1, Tommy Woodson threw an incompletion on the next play and then was sacked in the end zone for a safety by Alec James with 2:28 left in the quarter.

UW took over at its 47 after Dare Ogunbowale returned the kickoff 24 yards.

The Badgers needed eight plays to reach the end zone, with Clement scoring from 1 yard with 13:45 left in the half to help push the lead to 16-0.

To that point, UW had 216 total yards and held the ball for 15:02. Akron had 4 yards and had the ball for 1:13.

UW controlled most of the second quarter as Houston and Peavy hooked up for touchdowns of 13 and 34 yards.

The Badgers' only major lapse came when JoJo Natson fielded Anthony Lotti's 42-yard punt at his 45 and wen the distance untouched to help Pull the Zips within 23-7 with 3:12 left in the half.

As it had against LSU, UW responded with a critical score.

The Badgers needed just three plays to march 67 yards for their fourth touchdown of the half.

Clement gained five yards on first down, Houston found Wheelwright for 28 yards to the Akron 34 and then hit Peavy down the middle of the field on the next play, with 2:10 left in the half.

The second half was uneventful, which is the way the UW staff liked it.

On a day that saw No. 22 Oklahoma State fall at home to unranked Central Michigan, No. 2 Clemson struggled before subduing unranked Troy, 30-24, UW avoided having to sweat in the final minutes.
