Wishaw MSP to meet TSB bosses over bank closures

Wishaw MSP Clare Adamson is to meet representatives of TSB following the bank’s announcement of a reduction in opening hours.

TSB has revealed that, from July, most of its Scottish branches will only open for two or three days a week.

This includes the Wishaw branch, which will be open on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays between 9.30am to 4.30pm.

Ms Adamson said: “I am concerned that a reduction in services is just a prelude to branch closures.

“Many customers still rely upon face-to-face banking. The physical presence of a local branch is vital to vulnerable customers.

“A lack of internet or mobile access, an inability to travel or the expense of owning a landline mean that some are cut adrift by modern shifts in the way we use our banking services. Even isolation can mean that this small element of human interaction means a great deal to certain customers.

“That is why I am meeting with TSB representatives to outline my fears. Bank closures hit vulnerable people the hardest.”

The bank claims the reason for the partial closure is a seven per cent decrease in customers using the branch with a 78 per cent rise increase in customers using internet banking.

The company added: “There will also be no job losses as a result of these changes, with all partners in the closing branches being offered roles in other nearby branches.”

Shotts MSP Alex Neil has also hit out at closures of local banks in his constituency.

He added: “More of us do our banking on the internet or by phone, but that simply is not an option for everyone.

“A face-to-face banking service is indispensable for many and banks must engage with people on their needs before deciding to close a branch.”
