Wirral Wetherspoon pub The Master Mariner about to undergo massive expansion

A JD Wetherspoon pub in one part of Wirral is expanding and will be completely refurbished.

The Master Mariner, in New Brighton, will become more than 50% bigger when work extending it into the old Lacy’s Bar is finished.

The seaside town’s Wetherspoons opened in 2013 in buildings once occupied by RJs and the Playas Lounge nightclubs.

The company was slammed for not developing the former Lacy’s Bar site after buying it in 2015, but the pub chain’s proposal for a bigger pub on the seafront has been approved by Wirral Council.

Despite this, JD Wetherspoon was not able to confirm when work will start on the project.

Planning documents show that the former Lacy’s Bar will have new windows and doors to match the Master Mariner pub.

The Master Mariner, named after seaman Henry Cubbon who lived in lodging houses on the seafront row in the 1850s, will be completely refurbished, with the pub set to increase in size from 952 square metres to 1,698 square metres.

In its application, JD Wetherspoon admits that the former Lacy’s Bar is in a poor condition, having suffered from many years of neglect.

The company said that its work will improve the look not only of the site itself, but also the nearby street scene as a whole.

JD Wetherspoon spokesperson Eddie Gershon said: “We are delighted that Wetherspoon has been granted planning permission to extend The Master Mariner pub in New Brighton.

“The pub has proven a great success since opening and our plans to make the pub bigger highlights our commitment to the pub, its customers and staff and New Brighton itself.

“There are no confirmed start dates as yet for the development. We can assure customers that the pub’s name will remain the same.”
