Wirral schoolchildren told to wear masks amid rising covid cases

Schoolchildren in Wirral are being asked to wear facemasks again due to the increase in cases of Covid-19.

Parents of pupils from The Mosslands School in Wallasey received a letter this afternoon informing them all children will have to go back to wearing face coverings from Monday, June 21.

The latest figures from June 13 show there are 283 cases of covid in Wirral, which is 87.3 cases per 100,000.

And data shows 90% of Wirral's over 50s have now received both vaccinations.

In a letter to parents, headteacher Mr Whiteley said: "I am sure you will have seen information in the news about the rapid increase in covid infections locally.

"Whilst 60% of the adult population have now been vaccinated, 40% (90,000 people) remain vulnerable and it is our duty to do what we can to protect them.

"Sadly the rates of infection are higher now than they were when we returned from the last lockdown.

"As a result, we will have to reinstate some of the restrictions which we had put in place when we reopened."

Liverpool City Council have also informed parents that all classes from Year 7 and above are being asked to wear masks once again.

From Monday, June 21 all students at The Mosslands School will have to wear face coverings inside the school building unless they are exempt. This includes the corridors, dinner queues and classrooms.

The letter Mr Whiteley said: "Students must follow the one way system at all times. This will be enforced rigourously.

"Students will be required to wash their hands regularly and take responsibility for wiping down equipment they have used, as was the case in the previous period of restrictions."

Mr Whiteley also added: "Many schools in the region have had to send home pupils who have tested positive and in some cases whole year groups have had to self-isolate.

"To avoid this happening in Mosslands, it is imperative that students use home test kits that have been sent out, taking tests every Wednesday and Sunday and reporting results to the school and to the NHS."

It is not yet clear if this is the same advice and restrictions for all schools across Wirral.

Wirral Council was approached for comment.
