Wirral residents woken by woman "crying through their letter box"

A woman “crying through letterboxes” in Wirral in the early hours of the morning has sparked fears of a bizarre robbery trick.

One resident living in Tranmere said he was woken by the sound of a woman "crying and moaning" in his street in the early hours of Thursday.

He feared the bizarre incident could be linked to a number of people reporting a woman "crying through letter boxes" for people to open their doors in Wirral.

Similar incidents have been reported on social media in the past, with residents saying they heard a woman moaning through their letter boxes asking to be let in.

In a Wirral community forum on Facebook, one Tranmere resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "We live in Tranmere and at about 3am we heard a woman crying, coughing and moaning then a man talking in our street for about an hour and a half but we could not see them.

"We called the police to investigate but they took that long to turn up we just went back to bed. Seen a few things lately of people saying the same and that the woman was crying through letter boxes for people to open their doors."

The ECHO has asked  Merseyside Police  if it is aware of residents’ concerns, but their logs had no record of a call from the specific street in Tranmere overnight.

It's not the first time Wirral residents have raised fears of a robbery scam involving a woman shouting through letter boxes.

Back in 2017, people living in Tranmere,  Rock Ferry  and Beechwood said they were woken by the sound of someone knocking at their doors from around 4am.

When they failed to answer, they said a woman then began to cry for help through the letterbox.

Residents in Kirkby reported the same type of incident a few months earlier - and said they feared it was a bid to steal from their homes.
