Wirral residents left feeling unsafe over broken street lights and rubbish fires

Broken street lights and rubbish fires are leaving Wirral residents feeling scared.

These were the most commonly complained about issues over the past year according to new data.

FixMyStreet, a website that lets people lodge complaints about issues related to the council, revealed street lighting to be the biggest issue for residents (it was the subject of 36% of complaints) with fly-tipping and potholes also areas of concern.

In some cases, people said street lights were being left broken for as long as two years.

Detailing an incident of fly-tipping, one resident said: “I have reported this problem for the last three months to council about the 10 bags of rubbish left in (my) entry; smelling bad, covered in flies and being a fire hazard.

“On the 18th August it was set alight causing explosions and damage to a gate and trees. The fire brigade were called out. If moved when reported this would have been avoided.

“I hope now they will come and clean this mess up.”

However, street lighting was the most complained about subject, with many residents saying broken street lights caused them to feel scared and increased the chances of traffic accidents.

One resident said: "The street light outside my house has been broken for over 12 months (actually it's nearly two years) and despite us reporting this several times, nothing has been done to fix it.

“It is so dark at night and I can't see anything when I get to this section of the road which is quite disconcerting if I'm walking home from the train station at night.”

Emphasising the problems this causes for drivers, another resident said: “The street light out on Leasowe Road has been reported OUT dozens of times over the last two/one and a half years, all to no avail.

“The area at night is a safety hazard as people passing by in the dark are difficult to see by residents driving into the road, as the area is so dark.

“Perhaps it will take someone to be injured or knocked down before the light bulb is replaced!”

Another resident saw a broken street light damage a vehicle.

They said: “The lamp-post plastic cover was blown off and damaged a car in the road, this was one year ago. Light still not fixed and nothing offered and no-one came out."
