Wirral outlines plans to start opening schools again

Wirral Council is planning for the reopening of schools in the borough, after Boris Johnson set out steps for easing the lockdown in his address to the nation on Sunday.

Schools will gradually reopen from June 1 under the Prime Minister’s plans, starting with Reception, Year 1 and Year 6.

The council’s director of children’s services, Paul Boyce, said Wirral Council has received detailed guidance from the government about how the lockdown will be phased out.

The authority is working with schools to understand what they will need to provide child care for more children in the borough.

Wirral’s schools will also be in touch with parents and carers of children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 this week to find out how much support they need in the remainder of this term.

All schools in England have been closed since March 20.

Paul Boyce, Wirral Council’s director of children’s services, said: “During the Prime Minister's broadcast on Sunday 10 May, it was announced as part of a series of proposed and conditional steps to ease lockdown, that a phased return of some primary school year groups may be introduced.”

Mr Boyce said he would continue to work with parents and schools to get through the crisis.

He added: “We will build on the work we have already done to support the children of key workers and to provide support for vulnerable children.

“Our priority will continue to be the creation of safe environments for children and for the staff who work in our schools.

“I would like to say thank you on behalf of the council and schools to all of the parents and carers across Wirral. I know this is a extremely challenging situation for you all. We are so grateful for the continued cooperation we are receiving from parents and carers.

“By working together, we will get through this.”
