Wirral no longer city region’s least-infected borough

Wirral has lost its status as the least-infected part of the Liverpool City Region as a mixed picture on covid cases emerges.

In the week up to April 13, Wirral had 35 cases of the virus at a rate of 11 per 100,000.

That is a fall on the previous week’s rate of 13 per 100,000 with 42 cases registered.

However, in three of the last seven days, Wirral’s infection rate actually went up.

Cases in the borough have not risen for three consecutive days since January 8 when the virus was out of control in Wirral and a rate of 988 per 100,000 was recorded.

Although the overall trend is still one of a slight fall in cases, Halton has now overtaken Wirral as the least infected borough in the city region.

Halton’s rate is just nine per 100,000, lower than Wirral’s rate of 11.

This comes after a major fall in the Cheshire borough’s infection rate from 29 to nine on the same weekly comparison as was used for Wirral.

Elsewhere in our region, Liverpool’s infection rate fell from 21 to 15.

Knowsley also saw its rate decline, from 23 to 17, while St Helens' rate fell from 25 to 22.

In Sefton, a falling infection rate was also recorded.

The borough’s current rate is 19, down from 21 last week.
