Wirral MP Alison McGovern calls for kindness after death of Sir David Amess

Wirral MP Alison McGovern has called for kindness following the death of Conservative MP Sir David Amess.

Essex Police were called to a report of a stabbing in Leigh-on-Sea shortly after 12.05pm today and a 25-year-old has since been arrested.

Following the news, the South Wirral MP quoted a tweet from Brenden Cox, the widower of Jo Cox who was shot and stabbed outside her constituency advice surgery in 2016.

Mr Cox's tweet said: "My thoughts and love are with David’s family. They are all that matter now.

"This brings everything back. The pain, the loss, but also how much love the public gave us following the loss of Jo.

"I hope we can do the same for David now."

Ms McGovern, who was a close friend of Jo Cox, added: "As Brendan says. All love and care to his family. David was a very kind man and let that kindness be the way now."

Fellow Merseyside MPs shared their tributes following the news of Sir Amess death.

Peter Dowd, Labour MP for Bootle said: "I am shocked and saddened that Sir David Amess MP has died following an attack whilst carrying out his duties.

"My thoughts are with David’s family and staff - Southend West constituents have lost a true parliamentarian."

Wallasey MP Angela Eagle said: "This is appalling - my thoughts are with his family friends and staff at this most difficult of times MP David Amess dies after being stabbed at constituency surgery."

A statement from Essex Police said: "A man has been arrested on suspicion murder after a man was stabbed in Leigh-on-Sea.

"We were called to an address in Eastwood Road North shortly after 12.05pm today (Friday 15 October).

"We attended and found a man injured.

"He was treated by emergency services but, sadly, died at the scene.

"A 25 year-old man was quickly arrested after officers arrived at the scene on suspicion of murder and a knife was recovered.

"He is currently in custody.

"We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident."
