Wirral Morrisons makes big change after thefts

A Morrisons in Wirral is making a big change following a number of trolley thefts, including 25 recovered from a lake.

From next week, Thursday, April 22, all trollies at the New Brighton store will have a £1 coin lock in a bid to stop people stealing them.

A post on social media said the decision had come after complaints about the lack of shopping trollies at the shop.

It said: "Hi everyone... We have listened to our customers' feedback recently and are pleased to announce that as from next Thursday morning all our trollies will be fitted with the £1 coin lock.

"Over the last few years, we have lost numerous trollies due to theft... including 25 recovered by the wonderful "The New Brighteners" from the Marine Lake.

"Recently our customers have commented that there are not enough trollies available...next week we hope to rectify this.

"We will also reintroduce trolley tokens available from our Kiosk for £1.

"Hopefully, we will now have a full compliment of trollies throughout 2021.

"Thank you for your patience whilst we dealt with this issue."

The move received mixed responses with some concerned about having a pound coin to hand.

One said: "I can understand but pain in the rear if you don't have a pound handy or forgot! I've abandoned a couple of weekly shops due to no pound and ridiculous queue at customer service desk. Need to get one on my keyring."

Another said: "I hate that always never have a £1 so annoying."

But many welcomed the decision, one said: "Great move. It’s amazing how far some of these trolleys travel. Perhaps other local supermarkets will follow suit?"

Another added: "It's common sense to pay for a trolly. We have found many on our dog walks and returned them to the shops. Some people are just too lazy."

And a third said: "Positive idea!"
