Wirral leader tells people to stay away amid fears of bank holiday visitors

Wirral Council’s leader has urged people to stay home this weekend, amid fears another warm weekend will bring large crowds to the borough’s tourist hotspots.

Cllr Pat Hackett said people should “stop and think” before travelling to potentially crowded beauty spots.

Concerns were raised on Wednesday as huge numbers flocked to Formby beach in Sefton to enjoy the sunshine.

One person said the beach was the busiest they had ever seen it and Sefton Council said it was unable to cope with the number of people visiting the beach.

In a letter published today, Cllr Hackett said: “I know Government guidance has now changed and the Coronavirus lockdown has begun to ease.

“I also know Wirral has some amazing beauty spots that attract people from near and far. It's understandable that in good weather, these places become even more appealing.

“But I would like to ask you to stop and think a moment before you decide to take advantage of our countryside and coastline this bank holiday weekend. The busier somewhere is, the harder it is for everyone to stick to social distancing.”

The official UK coronavirus death toll is over 36,000, but many believe the true figure to be far higher.

Cllr Hackett added: “If you do decide to go out, please be vigilant in busier areas, and remember to keep at least two metres (six feet) apart from those who don't live with you.

“Coronavirus is still widespread. While being outside reduces the risk of catching it, it doesn't remove it altogether.”

Cllr Hackett reminded people that many restrictions and closures still applied.

He said: “Local businesses that are allowed to open will be set up to help customers stick to social distancing as much as possible, but council facilities in tourist areas will still be limited due to Coronavirus.

“All three islands at Hilbre remain closed, for now.

“We want to keep our local communities, businesses, and any visitors as safe as possible.

“So please - make sure you put your health and the health of others first, before deciding what to do this weekend.”
