Wirral hero saved hundreds of lives

A Wirral man who saved hundreds of lives during a 33 year career with the RNLI has died aged 68.

RNLI Hoylake service members have paid tribute to Pete Langley, from Hoylake, who joined the RNLI as a volunteer all-weather lifeboat crew member in 1968.

He served in numerous roles for the lifesaving service before hanging up his lifejacket and retiring in 2005.

During his time as crewman he was part of crews which saved a total of 211 people from peril at sea.

In 1971 he joined West Kirby Lifeboat as a volunteer, became a full time crew member on only one of three cruising lifeboats, designed to patrol at sea for long periods of time, a vessel known as the 'City of Bristol' between 1986 and 1988.

In 1998 Pete became an Emergency Mechanic and was appointed the following year as Hoylake RNLI's full-time mechanic, responsible for maintaining the 'Lady of Hilbre' lifeboat, her Talus tractor and boathouse before becoming a first aider in 2003 and retiring in 2005.

A spokesperson for Hoylake RNLI shared a post on social media with news of Pete's death, saying: "We are sad to report the passing of former Hoylake RNLI Mechanic and crew member Peter Langley.

"Throughout Pete’s long service with the RNLI, the lifeboats on which he was crew rescued 211 people.

"The thoughts and condolences of all of us at Hoylake RNLI go to Pete’s wife Hazel and his family and friends.

"We will be flying the RNLI flag at half-mast as a mark of respect and gratitude."

The post prompted an outpouring of condolences for the Wirral hero on the post, with one saying: "Fair winds sir, thank you for your service. Rest easy"

One said said: "A gentleman and will be sadly missed RIP Pete" and another added: "33 years of your time helping others in danger. Thank you Pete for all your help."

Another said: "Incredible life saving service and gentlemen. May the wind be ever at your back, fair weather & God speed, RIP"
