People in one part of Wirral thought a key part of their local park had closed forever, only for the council to confirm it will reopen.
Posting on the Facebook group Wallasey Gossip, one person said: “I was devastated to learn that the Rose Garden no longer exists.”
Indeed the Rose Garden at Central Park, Wallasey, has been closed for many years, but some thought the post referred to the Walled Garden, a beloved part of the park which has not been closed for good.
One such person asked: “That's not the Walled Garden is it?”
The first person who responded to the post said it was, however the Walled Garden has not closed permanently, but it is closed at the moment due to the pandemic.
Confirming this today, a spokesperson for Wirral Council said: “The grounds of the Walled Garden have been maintained throughout the pandemic, but there continues to be no public access to the garden and the café due to covid concerns.
“However, talks with the Friends group [of] volunteers – who operate the café – are taking place with a view to a safe reopening on 21st June.”
A post on Central Park’s Facebook page gave further details of what is going on at the park.
The post read: “Today I had to visit the park to drop some paperwork off and arrange for a meeting with Wirral Council park staff to reopen the cafe.
“While I was there I checked on the cafe to work out what work needed to be done.
“We have a lot of cleaning and restocking to do but it was nice to see the place again. We have missed it and our customers.
“I will let you know as soon as we are back and when we will reopen.”
A post from the page yesterday said the council has given £4,980 to help reopen and improve the garden, as well as to provide more seating.
Many were happy that the Walled Garden is set to reopen. One person said: “So good to hear updated news. Me and the kids have really missed this place! Makes you definitely appreciate it! Let's hope for an amazing summer here.”
While another added: “Great, really looking forward to the Walled Garden opening again.”
