Wirral beauty spot changing to stop Covid-19 spreading

A popular beauty spot is being modified to protect people from coronavirus.

A one-way system will be introduced at West Kirby’s Marine Lake from Monday to aid social distancing.

To put the system in place, the lake path will close between 8am and 4pm on Monday, February 8, although the work is subject to weather conditions.

Wirral Council said footfall at popular walking destinations has increased during the lockdown and a one-way system at Marine Lake in West Kirby will be trialled to help keep walkers safe, particularly during busy times.

Walkers wanting to visit the lake should use the entrance at Dee Lane (opposite the supermarket car park) and walk in an anticlockwise direction, exiting at Sandy Lane.

The local authority said the trial is a result of feedback and requests from residents in an effort to keep the path open in a Covid-secure way.

Cllr Liz Grey, chair of Wirral Council’s environment and transport committee, said: “The path around the Marine Lake is a popular walking spot for residents but at times it can get very busy, making it difficult to maintain social distancing when passing other users who are walking in the opposite direction.

“We’re doing all we can to help people stay safe and to keep the path open, as so many of us are relying on getting out for exercise and enjoying our local area during lockdown.”

The one-way system will be trialled for six weeks and reviewed in line with government guidance on the virus.

The trial will mean that the route can remain open for daily exercise, even with increased use of the path, while maintaining public safety and social distancing.

Signs and banners will be displayed at the location informing people of the one-way system and the route which must be followed.
