Wirral beach is transformed into a winter wonderland within minutes

A man captured the moment the Wirral coastline was battered by a freak hail storm in May turning West Kirby beach into a winter wonderland within minutes.

While many are gearing up for long summer walks leaving their coats behind, the start of May has been anything but warm and sunny.

With freezing temperatures, loud bursts of thunder and a number of dramatic hail storms, you would be forgiven for thinking it was still mid-winter.

Nick Durbin, also known on YouTube as Mister Drone UK, spotted the dark clouds rolling in over West Kirby yesterday and immediately got out his drone to document the foreboding atmosphere.

He watched as the storm crept closer and luckily managed to pack his drone away in time before the downpour.

He said on the video: "Just been hit with a hail storm. Look at the size of these. These hurt, these really hurt.

"If the Inspire 2 was still in the air now, it would be lost. I just got it down in time.

"This is May, these hurt. This is horrendous. What is going on?

"This must be the storm I was trying to get shots of by the wind farm and it has come across."

Many others in Wirral commented on the wild change in weather we have been experiencing over the last few days.

Rob Shaw from Irby posted a snap of the hail covering his garden and said the Met Office had forecast "glorious sunshine with a breeze".

The Met Office was contacted for comment about the wild weather Wirral has been experiencing.

Current forecasts show more unsettled weather on the horizon as temperature could plunge to as low as -3° tonight and while there will be a sunny start to Friday, local frost is expected.

The Met Office forecast said: "Cloudy and windy with spells of rain, heavy at times on Saturday. Mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain on Sunday, but warmer. Sunny spells and scattered heavy showers on Monday.

"Remaining unsettled into the new week and for the rest of this period. To start, spells of locally heavy rain across the far northwest, while all other areas see a mixture of sunshine and scattered showers on Monday.

"Downpours can possibly be quite heavy, with risks of hail and thunderstorms in the west. Winds fresh to strong across much of the UK, with potential for gales at first in the north and west, becoming confined to the northwest later.

"Temperatures nearer average to rather warm, bar the far north which is likely to still feel rather cold, to begin the week.

"A return to near to below-average temperatures thereafter with the ongoing unsettled weather of mixed showers or longer spells of rain and strong winds."
