Wintry weather brings roads disruption in and around Wishaw

A late night flurry of snow caused chaos for drivers on the roads in and around Wishaw.

Many drivers struggled to get to work due to the wintry weather with many of the roads coming to a standstill.

Stephanie Anderson, who works at University Hospital Wishaw, decided to leave her vehicle in the hospital car park and described what she saw walking home.

“It was chaos,” said Stephanie.

“It was pointless even trying to get the car out of the car park but it took me an hour to walk home.

“The roads were like an ice rink. It was totally gridlocked.

“They looked like they had barely been gritted. Cars were skidding all over the place.”

Others took to social media to warn of problems in other areas including Motherwell.

Airbles Road is said to be at a standstill with traffic queued back along the normally busy road.

One resident posted: “Airbles Road grid locked avoid if possible.”

Huge tail backs were reported on the A721 from Craigneuk through to Wishaw while the Garrion Bridge was at a standstill for over one hour.

North Lanarkshire Council tweeted that due to the weather it was experiencing a number of issues with school transport this morning.

However all schools remained open.

In its gritting update on its website NLC added: “Every day during winter we study the weather forecasts to decide if we need to treat any of our roads with salt.

“Weather and road conditions can vary significantly across North Lanarkshire so we may need to treat roads in one area but not another.

“We cannot treat all roads at the same time so, with our partner Amey, we prioritise and treat according to our winter service policy and procedures.”
