About 200 kanburi winter yellowtail fish arrived at the Himi fishing port in Himi, Toyama Prefecture, early Wednesday morning, heralding the arrival of the kanburi season. The fish were caught with an anchored offshore net in Toyama Bay.
The Himi fishery cooperative certifies yellowtails weighing more than 6 kilograms as "Himi kanburi." A selection panel comprising cooperative officials and middlemen issues a declaration of Himi kanburi each year when stable shipments are expected.
The Himi kanburi landed at the port on the day included many that weighed about 8 to 10 kilograms, with some tipping the scales at more than 13 kilograms.
The winter yellowtail fish are fatty as they travel down the Sea of Japan around this time of the year.
"We expect to catch more [yellowtail] than usual," said a fisheries cooperative official.
Catches will continue through the end of January.
