Winter Solstice 2019 - everything you need to know about the shortest day of the year in Glasgow

Winter has lots of good points.

Autumn leaves, roaring fires, gingerbread lattes and the season's must have accessories to keep you toasty are just some of the highlights.

But, as with anything good in life, there are a few downsides too - namely the long, cold dark nights that we all know (but don't love) so well.

Winter in Glasgow can be brutal, ranging from heavy snowstorms to just general dreichness.

It's basically a pretty wet and cold time of year - the sun comes up late and goes down before 4pm.

But the good news is that today, the lack of sunlight comes to a head because it’s Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year.

This morning the sun rose at 8:46am and will already be setting at 3:44pm, giving us less than seven hours of daylight from sunrise to sunset. How lovely!

In fact, a study by Jet2Holidays suggests Glaswegians will only experience 24 minutes of daylight today when you take into account time spent indoors at work or in school.

Unsurprisingly, the study also found that 84% of Glaswegians suffer from some sort of winter malaise, with 27% suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

However, the fact that today is the shortest day of the year also means that it can only get better from here.

Today the sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn and is also at its lowest point in the sky - for those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere.

From tomorrow, Monday, we will get progressively more daylight until we reach June 20 and the Summer Solstice, where would should have almost double the amount of sunlight we have today.

So there you have it, Glasgow. Today might be dark and gloomy, but as Christmas approaches the days are going to become longer - slowly but surely.

The countdown to June 20 begins now!
