Winter solstice 2018: Shortest day of the year to coincide with a full cold moon and the Ursid Meteor Shower

This year’s Winter solstice will coincide with two special celestial events: a full moon known as the "cold moon" and a meteor shower.

The solstice marks the moment the sun shines over the Tropic of Capricorn - its most southern point.

It means the Northern Hemisphere experiences its shortest day and longest night of the year and also marks the start of winter.

The sun will set at 3.53pm between the tallest two ‘trilithons' - two upright stones capped by a horizontal stone - of the Stone Henge.

Thousands of people gather around the landmark each year to celebrate the winter solstice. According to Pagan traditions, it marks the revival of the sun for the start of a new year.

On the same night, skygazers will also be treated to a so-called cold moon, the name for a full moon in December.

It’s the first time since 2010 since the two have been less than 24 hours apart, and the last time until 2029.

The Ursid Meteor Shower, which is visible annually between December 17 and 25, will also be on display tonight between 4pm and 8am on Saturday.

Its name comes from its position in the sky because it appears to be shooting out from the Ursa Minor constellation.
