
A worker covers trees with straw mats called "winter fence" at Odori Park in Chuo Ward, Sapporo, on Wednesday. The park is being considered as the start and finish for the Tokyo Olympic marathons. The winter fence heralds the arrival of winter in Sapporo. About 2,300 trees, including azaleas and yews, are being covered with mats to protect them from the snow and the cold, and branches are fixed to bamboo bars with ropes to prevent them from breaking under the weight of the snow. It will take about two weeks to complete the work.
