Winter health tips: Protect yourself from viruses, air pollution

Winters are peculiarly adverse in northern India due to western disturbances and the snow fall in the Himalayas. Delhi-NCR region is particularly affected due to heavy air pollution with AQI(Air quality Index) often staying above 300 coupled with biomass fuel and crop burning creating an environment conducive to the spread of these viruses. Viral illness related to Flu, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), adeno, rhino ,COVID-19 viruses see a surge during winters causing significant morbidity and mortality. Recently there is a potential rise in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases. High risk groups include school going kids, elderly who prefer morning walks and those with a weak immune systems (Diabetics, cancer, kidney ,heart and lung disease patients).

How to stay healthy this season

1. Hand hygieneHand hygiene is the most effective way to prevent droplet infections. Wash your hands with soap and water especially after touching outdoor surfaces, shaking hands ,or travelling in public transport. If soap is unavailable, use frequent hand sanitizers . Avoid touching your face, eyes, nose, and mouth without hand hygiene.

2. N95 maskWear N95 OR N99 good quality, proper fitting masks when outdoors. Remember to replace them when they become wet ,loose fitting or soiled.

3. Balanced dietInclude Chicken, eggs, milk, nuts, green leafy vegetables, pulses, berries, grapes, avocado, olive oil, tomatoes, pumpkin, beet root in your diet with avoidance of fried and fatty food. Quit smoking ,vapes, hukkah and excessive alcohol, as they weaken your immune system and cause cancers.

4. Vaccination is a mustVaccination is one of the best ways to build immunity against certain diseases. Get your yearly flu shot, pneumococcal vaccine, and any other vaccine as recommended by doctors particularly if you are in a high-risk group.

5. Avoid overcrowding Overcrowded, poorly ventilated and populated areas can help spread viral illness faster and you may succumb to them. Avoid going to or wear a N95 mask in markets, public transport and social gatherings.

6. HydrationCold weather often reduces our sense of thirst, but staying hydrated is essential for keeping ourself healthy . Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.

7. Protect yourself from coldWear proper warm clothes to maintain body your temperature and prevent cold-related illnesses. Avoid travelling to cold places for tourism.

8. Early consultation with a specialistIf you develop symptoms like high grade fever, persistent cough, chest pain or severe breathing problem consult your doctor immediately.

Simple awareness and adherence to these measures can go a long way in keeping yourself, your kids and families safe.
