Winter fuel payment where it’s needed most

We have been sent our winter fuel payment from the government as we are over 70. We are teacher pensioners and so we are not really in need of this payment. We are aware that there are thousands worse off than us for whom the payment is necessary to help keep warm and healthy this winter.

We have decided to donate the payment to the Guardian Refugee Appeal and hope that others, who are able, will also do so. The money raised would go far to help people who no longer have homes of their own to heat.

• Following the BBC Trust’s confirmation that BBC3 will cease to broadcast on digital terrestrial television (BBC3 will be off air and online-only by February, 27 November) we urge the BBC to donate the spectrum currently used by BBC3 to local digital television franchise holders. This would enhance the reach and profitability of local television and extend the range and diversity of news and current affairs available to local audiences.

• The undercover police officers who slept with women (Letters, 23 November) should be charged with rape, and their superior officers charged with conspiracy. Justice requires nothing less.

• Don McCullin’s concerns about the trust that can we place in digital photographic imagery (Report, 28 November) are misplaced. Photographic imagery, digital or otherwise, has always had the potential to be manipulated and altered to suit the agendas of unscrupulous photographers. Alexander Gardener did in the American civil war, Frank Hurley did in the first world war. As Lewis Hine once put it, “While photographs may not lie, liars may photograph.”
