Winter weather often causes flight delays and cancellations, leaving travelers stranded and frustrated. While airlines cannot control the weather, they are obligated in the U.S. to provide refunds to customers whose flights are canceled. Here's what you need to know about your rights and what to do when cancellations start piling up.

When airlines anticipate bad weather affecting flights, they often allow travelers to reschedule their trips without incurring fees. Travelers should monitor weather forecasts and check for rescheduling offers on the airline's website or app.

Prior to heading to the airport, it's advisable to verify the status of your flight online to avoid being stuck at the airport. Airlines typically cancel flights hours or days before departure.

If your flight is canceled, seek assistance from customer service representatives at the airport or contact the airline's reservations staff via phone or online. Airlines will usually rebook passengers on later flights at no extra cost, depending on seat availability.

While you can request to be booked on another airline, airlines are not mandated to do so. Passengers are entitled to a refund if they choose not to proceed with the trip, regardless of the ticket type purchased.

U.S. airlines are not required to provide cash compensation or cover lodging and meals for stranded passengers, even if the cancellation is the airline's fault. However, the Biden administration is considering changing this policy to align more closely with European airline consumer protections.

Passengers are advised to familiarize themselves with each airline's policies regarding refunds and coverage for expenses in case of flight cancellations or significant delays. Booking a backup flight and being courteous to airline staff during disruptions are also recommended strategies for travelers.

As regulations on airlines may change with the incoming administration, passengers should stay informed and prepared for potential disruptions during winter travel.
